How is the Indian food science industry faring currently?
The purchase power parity of the middle income group in India is rising considerably and hence, the demand for quality food products is also increasing. India is the second largest producer of food and holds the potential to be the largest on the global food and agricultural canvas. The Indian food industry is projected to grow by US$ 330 billion by 2013. The sector has attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) worth US$ 1,253.79 million from April 2000 to April 2011.
What kinds of career opportunities does this industry offer to young professionals?
There are a number of opportunities available in this field for students, like research scientist, food technologist, organic chemist, biochemist, analytical chemist, etc. Students can opt for either a diploma or a degree course, according to their needs and interest levels in food science, processing and technology in India. Students, in the stream of physics, chemistry and biology, can also opt for graduation and post-graduation degrees in home science, food technology and food sciences.
Can you describe the current employment/hiring trends in this industry?
Food science graduates are in-demand to perform challenging roles in the industry, government and research organisations, wherever food is manufactured, shipped or stored. The Indian food and healthcare industry is adding manpower, giving salary increments and showing signs of stabilising. Positions like new product developers, production supervisors, production executives and quality control/quality assurance executives are in high demand. There are also marketing and technical service positions available with ingredient suppliers. With the government of India having a separate ministry for food processing and the thrust given for food safety, post harvest technology, and export, the job opportunities are plenty.
What are the skills and aptitude required to flourish in this industry?
Anyone who is analytical, with an aptitude for science and is interested in food nutrition and health, possesses good communication skills, is a good team player and can excel in this field, should join. Basic skills like inquisitiveness, a hunger for knowledge, and a ‘ready to learn' attitude, along with a demonstrated enthusiasm towards tasks, goal orientation coupled with good work ethics are essential for success.
